Schedules

Practices will be held every Thursday at St. Margaret's between the hours of 4:00 and 5:00 PM.  Unless other scheduled events force us to move, we will meet in Siller's Hall.  Students are asked to bring both their practice chanters as well as their tutor book to every practice.  (click here for information on purchasing a practice chanter and tutor book)

Required Supplies

The following items are required for the beginning piping class:

  • Practice Chanter- available in regular or 3/4 size (for those with smaller hands).   Chanter should have countersunk holes to more accurately simulate the real pipe chanter.  If your hands are big enough, you should also choose a "long" chanter over a "regular" chanter (The holes in a long chanter are spaced the same as a real bagpipe chanter)
  • Tutor Book- In this class, we have chosen the "Sandy Jones" tutor book.  It can be purchased at any of the vendors listed on this page.
  • Metronome- It is highly recommended that each of you purchase some sort of metronome to practice with.  We recommend a small and compact digital metronome that can be easily carried with you.  These can be purchased at any local music store

Optional materials:
Practice Pipes
Practice pipes; as the name implies, are ideal for learning and improving playing. Since the volume is reduced, it's the perfect sound level for indoor playing and music sessions with other instruments. The set includes the bag, blowpipe, chanter, bag cover, reeds and drones (one tenor and one bass). This set is made using modern materials designed to provide a very traditional tone with the added convenience of synthetic reeds; it's easy to tune and maintain, and fold up into a small zipper case that can go anywhere.  These can be purchased from most of the vendors and are around $175.00
Scottish Bagpipes

When you are ready to move up to the "real thing", we will set you up with a vendor that can give you the best deal on a set of pipes.  There are a number of companies that make quality pipes and prices can vary depending on the amount "trim" (imitation ivory, silver, nickel) that you get with your set.  Used pipes are very hard to come by, but we will definitely help you look when the time comes if you are interested.  Expect to pay around $800.00 to $1200.00 for a full set of pipes with carrying case.  They are not cheap!
